Although Sheffield guitarist extraordinaire has themed this record on the decline of mobile libraries, there's a distinct lack of whimsy to the music he has created and it is often perhaps too good for a record that has such a theme to it. There's a dusty sadness to these pieces which combine John Fahey-esque guitar compositions with nice post rock-ish, jazzy drumming which brings to mind both Jim O'Rourke and Ryley Walker. One production tick I've noticed on the standout tracks of 'Light Is There If You Like' and 'March of the Dissonant Few' is a seemingly out of place synth buzz that sits within the compositions detracting from the organic free flowing playing. I'd prefer to hear Jaycock's guitar naked - it is full enough to carry the tunes without any whistles and bells other than the drums which sit alongside it.
Not many tracks leave the guitar alone in it's element but I feel that tracks like 'Shark With a Monkey Heart' could benefit from being stripped back to just the captivating guitar. Still, 'Brighton With Flying Saucer Inc' has an almost Brian Eno feel to the synth stabs which occasionally hammer discordantly at the beauty.
So good at times, such beautiful compositions....just executed in a way that is bothering me a bit.
