The second book-end to Jon Savage's hugely popular 1966 Faber book and Ace compilation and to last year's 1967 CD follow-up, this prequel double CD based around 1965 represents the lead up and context to all that was about to happen. A genre-spanning mix of hit singles, slow burners and lost gems from soul, funk, psych, garage and rock n roll, these are the 45s that defined the year, captured the mood and crystallised Jon Savage's personal memories of the year. Dylan, denim, soft drugs and political disaffection, 1965 saw the death of Churchill and the rise of civil rights. 1965 was the year the sixties ignited

In the era of endless playlists, numerous 'curated' cultural retrospectives, not to mention island-sized landfill compilations, and never mind mixtapes, where does one begin? A trusted source would combine the knowledge and insight of the historian, the sidewalk social scientist's grasp of pop political milieu, and the blazing enthusiasm of a trufan. These songs tell a story, but you can also just dance to them. Hit after hit - some canonically familiar, others belonging to another, overlooked history. Of the trilogy (to date, all great) of double disc 60s retrospectives assembled by Savage and released by Ace recordings, this, perhaps unexpectedly, carries the most thrilling charge. The excitement is palpable, an anticipation of a culture about to accelerate into high gear. The incipient feeling of explosive potential is a thrill. We know what happened next; with this CD one can time travel and experience a moment in which cultural tectonic plates began to shift, a future as yet unwritten. Inspiring. And it rocks too. I cant wait for 1964, 1968 and so on.
