Red Garland operates in both a trio and quintet setting in this second batch of recently discovered master recordings unearthed from the Fantasy vaults. The trio sessions include an unissued "Satin Doll," along with three other numbers that featured Garland working with his favorites, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Specs Powell. They're nicely played, but nothing exceptional. More interesting are the three cuts with Garland backed by a group that includes underrecorded trumpeter Richard Williams and alto saxophonist Oliver Nelson, played with more punch and energy than expected. These cuts marked one of the few times Nelson and Garland ever worked together, and Nelson's excitement seems to have spread throughout the group, especially drummer Charlie Persip, who doesn't dominate, yet makes his presence felt with authority.~Ron Wynn
