Deep’a & Biri - Dominance (2018)

Deep’a & Biri follow up their 2013 debut album on Gigolos with their first long player for their own label. Reflecting their interest in varying forms of techno, Dominance is a mixed affair. It includes ambient and low-tempo techno pieces like “Theories of Loneliness” and “Alpha Cephei” alongside harder, linear workouts like “Avicenna” and the broken beats and industrial undercurrents on “Alaklinity”. While this could easily result in a jarring affair in less adept studio hands, the pair manage to articulate all of these elements in a fluid, cohesive manner, with the hypnotic, cavernous grooves of “Voltage” and “Ecole de Nancy” impressing most.
