Jonny Whites sterling Social Experiment label is back with a fantastic new albumfrom highly respected Toronto producer Greg Gow.Greg Gow has been a part of electronic musics landscape for over 15 years now, with his own Restructured label acting as home to his early innovative releases. In2009 he was brought onboard as an artist at Transmat by the legendary Derrick Mayand was key in the labels relaunch of the time. He has performed at the worldrenowned Movement Festival in both Detroit and is very much part of the citysessential extended family. With fans including Kevin Sanderson and Richie Hawtin, and releasing on the likes of KMS & 100%% Pure Greg has proved his worth in theworlds of both house and techno with his own distinct underground sound, as thisnew album proves. The LP kicks off with Inception, a late night ambient piece that soundtracks asleeping urban metropolis, before Fly Tipping immediately brings a soul infusedDetroit groove that is slow and sensuous, spaced out and smooth. Cleverly uppingthe ante, Curl De Sac is a perfectly dubby, deep rolling house track with well craftedsynths extending in all directions and then Refractions re-sets the mood with somebrooding and beatless chords, found sound details and gentle breaking waves. The second half of this most coherent journey starts with another classic dub technocut in Lost Days, which is rippled with electric static and underpinned by firm rubberkicks, before Still Life shows off Gows mastery of his synths: they ripple into thedistance and bring a sense of serenity as they build to a peak then dissipate oncemore. Its a fine demonstration of tension and energy as Too Late gets more forcefuland driven but no less deep and cerebral with its crisp boom bap kicks and hits.Closer Beyond Time is a blissful final interlude that sounds like a spaceship driftingthrough the cosmos as the captain mutters into his PA.That final track rounds out a most excellent journey that is imbued with warm technosoul and makes sense both on intimate dancefloors as well as up close inheadphones.
