Dave Graney was an odd figure in the world of Australian rock music. At a time when grunge was still a potent force, and when the new rock of bands like Live was rising to prominence, Graney continued to defy trends by releasing successful albums that owed more to lounge music than they did '70s rock. But it is a tribute to Graney's considerable talent that, despite the odds against him, his albums in the '90s established him as a bona fide pop star.
With You Wanna Be There But You Don't Wanna Travel, Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes perfected the lounge-pop they'd made their mark with on Night of the Wolverine. Stylistically, there wasn't a lot of difference between the two albums, although Travel featured slightly stronger songs.
A huge success in Australia, the album generated a number of hits, including "I'm Gonna Release Your Soul," "Warren Oates," and "The Stars, Baby, the Stars." This is Graney's best work with the Coral Snakes.
