The very talented South Australian singer/songwriter/guitarist Liam Gerner has returned to Australia with an album of his own varied songs he recorded in LA after almost ten years of musical adventures in Europe and North America with a host of musicians, from Tom T. Hall to Elton John.
Playing with Liam under the Moreton Bay Figs at Womadelaide in 2003 was one of the best gigs I've ever done, full of Liam's positive energy and youth. He left for Europe shortly after, playing in London and Ibiza and all over the continent, touring with Paul Weller, Jason Isbell, Paolo Nutini, Alanis Morissette and the Drive By Truckers. In the USA he toured with Ryan Bingham and ended up living near him, among the wildlife and stark beauty of Topanga Canyon. I visited him there shortly before he moved to Melbourne (Where he also plays a lot with his new group, the Alan Ladds) and I'm one of the guests on the album, along with primo cajun accordionist Steve Riley, the Jayhawks Gary Louris and fantastic Chicago-based singer songwriter Robbie Fulks. {We'll hear three tracks from Robbie's great new album, which we'll feature next Wednesday)
We'll also hear a couple of tracks from the Panics' Jae Laffer's debut solo album When the Iron Glows Red, from Melbourne groups the Lost Ragas and the Tea Leaves, the same spiritual from the Blind Boys of Alabama and from Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys and a cut from the new album by a trio led by pianist Graham Wood, who, after his recovery form a rare and aggressive form of cancer, calls himself, 'the luckiest man alive.'
Tracks:
01. Liam Gerner - Debt and Denialville (4:02)
02. Liam Gerner - Hank and Tammy (3:39)
03. Liam Gerner - Say I Do (3:10)
04. Liam Gerner - What Could Have Been (2:33)
05. Liam Gerner - Rich Man (3:19)
06. Liam Gerner - Mother Nature's Runaway Girl (3:19)
07. Liam Gerner - All We've Done (2:51)
08. Liam Gerner - The Resurrection of Henry Box Brown (4:32)
09. Liam Gerner - Window To A Wall (4:20)
10. Liam Gerner - Son of a Scoundrel (2:58)
11. Liam Gerner - Land of No Roads (3:50)
