It is a privilege to work directly with a composer. How often the interpreter would like to ask questions of those who are missing or inaccessible! For this project, Rodolphe Boulmier-Bruneau and I had regular opportunities to work together over several years. I discovered his music first as a listener. I remember being completely taken in by his universe, at times introvert and at times exalted.
Our first collaboration was for the 2010 "New Soloists Festival" in Paris. The piece "Ses ailes deployees" was created there. I found very strong elements that are integral parts of Rudolph's language - its expressiveness, its art of exploiting the piano, his attraction to virtuosity, its construction, his continuous search for new sound worlds, his incantations, his nostalgia, his writing - at times turbulent and at times serene. So many of the elements found again and again in his works.
His music appeals to the performer, and leaves at once a range of possibilities of expression while always offering a clue to its interpretation, because his music recounts its literary references, points of departure, sources of inspiration, all openings to an ineffable and poetic imagination. These bells, sometimes promising joy, sometimes sounding like a knell, captivate both listener and interpreter - Geoffroy Couteau
