Wizard of the Eye is also an example of the 'good' kind of psychedelic production, done by the band themselves. Sure, the whole album is hazy and heavy. But, there isn't so much fiddling with filters that it strips all emotion from the vocal or subtle changes from the arrangements. That is always important, but it is particularly important for Busses because they are genuinely talented. These guys don't have to hide behind studio trickery. A track like "Big Surprise" or album closer "Sunrise" (my personal favorite) for instance, would be much less interesting in the hands of one of the more heavily fuzzed out artists coming out of San Francisco these days.
This is the album you have on in the car at night when you're up to no good. It's the scene in the movie right before things go terribly wrong. It is the drug user spiraling hopelessly out of control. You might not like to admit it, but there is a place for Wizard of the Eye in everyone's music collection, just for those times when the **** needs to go down."
