After a brief dalliance with 78 Edits, Edinburgh-based producer Barry "B-Jam" Fell pops up on Superbreak with a bulging sack full of dubby disco and electrofunk re-edits. Fell's greatest asset is his emphasis on groove (think rubbery basslines, swinging beats, subtle kicks etc), and all six cuts here offer the perfect balance between goodtime fun and fuss-free, floor-friendly jams. There are some moments that will be familiar to disco diggers (see the disco/jazz-funk tomfoolery of "No Fly Zone"), but for the most part he's re-cut unfamiliar jams. Of these, it's the boogie badness of "Set My Sights" and delightfully heady "Love It" that really stand out.
2013 - 8 Track
(01) River
(02) Europa Ensemble
(03) Fantasy Trip
(04) More Please
(05) Flame Roasted Falcons
(06) Brooken
(07) Later
(08) Strange Dreams
B-Jam hasn't time to worry about single titles; he's too busy on a furious retro funk mission for all that shizzle to matter. Unsurprisingly, the 8 Track EP features eight tracks, all deeply rooted in the glorious heyday of disco funk. Highlights include the bonkers filtered flute-a-thon "Europa Ensemble", the Earth, Wind & Fire on serious downers of "Fantasy Trip" and the frankly amazingly titled "Flame Roasted Falcons".
2014 - Dog Slap
(01) Hide Out
(02) The Force
(03) The Magician
(04) Talk About
Things have been a bit quiet from retro funk producer B Jam since his bumper packed eight-track EP last year on Midnight Riot. We can all relax now, as he's back with four new tracks under the attention grabbing title "Dog Slap". The rolling electro-funk stomper "Hide Out" gets things going nicely, and from there we see The Real Thing's disco staple "Can You Feel The Force" get a rocket up its backside and "The Magician" provide some breaky, rubber bass thrills, before "Talk About" wraps things up in a gloriously chopped up '80s electro-soul fashion.
2015 - Wood Rush
(01) Sundog
(02) Sundog [Fingerman's Acid Doge Rework]
(03) Juicer
(04) On It
(05) Good Turn Out
It's a while since we last heard from Edinburgh-based re-editor B-Jam, who previously impressed with a couple of excellent EPs on Superbreak. Here he resurfaces on Fingerman's Hot Digits label, delivering a selection of edits clearly aimed at house dancefloors. The real killer is "Sundog", which although based on loops from Clout's Balearic, reggae-disco classic "Sunshine Baby", does a terrific job in chopping up and beefing up the original elements. It's accompanied by a housier, acid-flecked rework from Fingerman. Elsewhere, he turns a disco-funk jam into a straight-up house hustler ("Juicer"), reaches for the filters and heavyweight kick-drums on the synth and slap-bass rinse-out "On It", and delivers another deliciously stuttering dancefloor cut-up ("Good Turn Out").
