An album of breezy jangle pop from New York’s Pale Lights. If you’re a fan of prime proponents of the genre from the 80s/90s like Felt, the Pastels and the Chills or even more recent revivalists like Veronica Falls, then the chances are you’ll love this. All the indie pop hallmarks are here: straightforward pop song structures propelled by crystalline guitars with an unfussy production and melodic vocals, mostly relaying bittersweet tales about life in the Big Apple. There’s no new ground being broken here and it will sound either comfortingly familiar or infuriatingly twee depending on your point of view.
Either way, the album sounds like a true labour of love and I guess the very tweeness of the whole thing is itself quite radical in these days of ultraviolent, sexed-up doom and gloom.
