Local bands that release an album. It’s always a good thing to improve your local pride! Nobodaddy’s one of those bands that achieved it. This Norwich-based guitarist duo staggered the local music scene with their debut album ‘There Must Be Less to Life Than This’ and now hopes to evoke the same reaction with their second LP ‘Longing for a Flight’. The title sounds promising, but does the album live up to the expectations? Maybe. That is if you’re a big fan of guitars and never get tired of them, though.

This album starts off quite positive, sounding as if it is a recorded live gig somewhere in a Californian restaurant. Once their flight starts however, you quickly find yourself listening to an album that gets darker by the track, only to end again on a more positive note with ‘Heel and Toe’, the last and perhaps best track of the album. The beautiful songwriting of the two artists, Adam Clark and Mike Wordingham, carries you through this emotional turnover in a very fluent way, guided by magnificent guitar chords.

And that is immediately the only thing we might have a little problem with. The album is great, but a guitar remains a guitar. It would be a welcome change to hear a different instrument somewhere in this 10-track album, but does the singer-songwriters scene lend itself for a varied use of different instruments? I don’t think so. Listeners just have to deal with it and let themselves be carried away by the timbre, which works out perfectly, except if you really don’t like strings.

Nobodaddy brings the kind of music that lends itself perfectly to be brought live. Enchanting the listeners is something their sound is definitely fit for, but we feel like they didn’t drive their talent to the limit with this album. They’re longing for a flight, we’re longing for them to broaden their musical capacities. So far so good, but there’s always room for improvement.
