Yawn - Love Chills (2014)

After releasing their debut full-length Open Season in 2011, YAWN made a name for themselves in the indie-pop circuit, touring the country with bands like Yuck, Mates of State, Tame Impala and the Kooks. Next week the Chicagoans are releasing Love Chills, a sophomore LP that reflects an effortless attention to detail. The fuzzed-out joy ride maintains its focus on melodies rather than getting lost in a sea of samplers and synths, a feat not easily achieved when dealing with psychedelic electro that readily lends itself to a dance party. Here YAWN dabble in mellowed-out fusions of African percussion and wind instruments, catchy rhythms and falsetto group vocals. At other moments, distorted, note-bending guitar solos lurk into the mix (“Mylene”), often awash with grandiose choruses, jumpy chords and unpredictable drum beats (“Flytrap”).
