Four Eyed Soul is the very first release from the Philadelphia, PA musician Cookie Rabinowitz, and let me tell you, this guy has delivered something remarkable with this album. Rabinowitz conveys a very catchy, pop-meets-funk sound, much like that of The Gorillaz. His music is weird, yet soulful at the same time.
He shares political messages through tracks such as “Sing Alone, Sing Along,” and “Blue.” In the first track he sings of how social media has desensitized the public in a way that encourages them to spend more time by themselves than with their closest family and friends. Although many of his songs are filled with thought-provoking lyrics, “Blue” is perhaps one of his finest, most inspiring pieces. Not all of his pieces are as serious, however. “Crakka Smile” and “Rock & Roll Karaoke” are two of the lighter tracks that appear through the album.
Rabinowitz has peppered his album with interesting song titles and equally interesting songs. For instance, “Text You With My Mouth” and “Talking To Pigeons” are two of the titles that especially stand out. The first is a song that follows along the same lines of “Sing Alone, Sing Along” in that it talks of the impact new technology has had on our day-to-day lives. The second is a track about being alone and living a simple life. In his chorus Rabinowitz sings, “I’m dancing for no one. I’m talking to pigeons. No fancy suit or colors on; just wanna sing my simple songs and spend my time.”
This album is filled with a quirky style that needs some getting used to, but it is one that is ultimately and intrinsically soulful. Once you settle into Rabinowitz’s sound, there’s no turning back. This guy has a great thing going for himself. Rabinowitz has released a unique, brutally truthful album that is sure to turn a good deal of heads. These 13 tracks on Four Eyed Soul are not only worth purchasing, but they’re also worth telling your friends about as well as telling absolutely everyone you happen to pass on the street about.
